Hotel Lexington Hawaiian Room

Here are the photos that did not show up on my powerpoint. All of them are from the Hotel Lexington Hawaiian Room in NYC. Notice how in the ad, the female hula dancer does not look Polynesian, hence reinforcing the new image of "hawaiianess" that the haole's wanted to promote through tourism. Hope you all enjoy!

  1. I definitely think these advertisements show how hula can be exploited in some cases to promote tourism. Looking back on the 20th century and taking into account the addition of Hawaii as a state and the events of Pearl Harbor, it is not surprising that industries wanted more people to visit there. I think the pictures try to advertise hula as "an authentic dance everyone should come and try". We all know the term "authentic" is debatable though, and often used to accept or reject a particular audience.

  2. Thank you for posting the pictures. They definitely add to your presentation. I do also agree with you and Brittany in the fact that hula is exploited through advertisements. I do not find this surprising; however, I just think that in this country it is a common trend among advertisers. As a side note, I feel the more people try to stress authenticity, the more it loses it's meaning. I almost feel that when something is truly authentic it does not need all of this fancy advertising to prove its importance.

  3. Great pictures. Thanks for posting them. And great point, Samantha - the closer you look at "authenticity," the fuzzier it tends to get.
