Dance Dubstep

Our recent class discussion about how todays popular music styles, particularly edm, doesn't have any routine dance led me to this example of how to dance to dubstep music. Dubstep is slow, bass heavy electronic music. There is a large emphasis on the beat, but no right or wrong way to dance to it. This video is a cool interpretation of dubstep dance:

  1. Love it. What I like in particular is how the dancer pays such attention to the nuances in the bass wobble and reacts accordingly. Every little flick of the hand or glide of the feet is right on time with the change ups. Dubstep is stuttered by nature, be it the half-time drum n' bass drum beat or the hiccuping bass line (which often seems to "reset", as the song here demonstrates). Likewise, this guys does a great job of "stuttering"--being really sharp in his movements but still maintaining fluid motion. Surprising amount of grace to a genre that most people I know usually head bang to...

  2. When we did our internet report there was a really amazing article on the history of dubstep and the dancing that comes along with it. The author believes dubstep allows for more natural movement:

  3. Wow. I really like the robotic influenced moves in the beginning. It's refreshing to see something new and creative.

It's good to know that there's no right or wrong way to dance to this kind of music. There's no pressure to move a certain way on the dance floor, so people can let loose and move to whatever feels natural.

  4. Whoa! I'm kind of blown away by this dance. The movements and timing with the music are so impressive! I guess it's kind of weird, but it reminds me of a mix of The Matrix and Star Wars. It's definitely cool! I like how you said there is no right or wrong way to dance to it, but still, I wouldn't say it's easy to dance to. It's like what Chris said, you have to be sharp in the movements while maintaining a fluid motions. That's not easy to do, but with practice, it really pays off and becomes a really neat performance. Great video! Maybe this guy could become a member of the next America's Best Dance Crew.
